Doctor of Education in Higher and Postsecondary Education Degree Program

The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Higher and Postsecondary degree program is designed for students desiring to enhance professional competence as educational leaders, instructors, or consultants in academic affairs, student affairs, or student services divisions within community colleges, technical schools and institutes, four-year colleges and universities as well as government, military, religious, profit or nonprofit postsecondary educational organizations and divisions.
Eligibility for Licensure
The Doctor of Education in Higher and Postsecondary degree program is not intended to lead to certification or licensure.
Program Learning Outcomes
The EdD in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program is designed around four key learning areas.
Program Learning Outcome One: Advance Social Justice and Transformative Practice
1.a Foster democratic and empowering environments that promote understanding and respect for diversity
1.b Cultivate the active engagement of diverse communities in social justice initiatives that enhance student development and learning
1.c Demonstrate critical reflection that strengthens or improves themselves, their institutions, and their professional community
Program Learning Outcome Two: Design, implement, manage, and assess learning opportunities sensitive to stakeholder characteristics and collegiate and community environments
Program Learning Outcome Three: Promote Organizational and Administrative Development
3.a Employ ethical and collaborative management and leadership practices appropriate to the field and role that assist institutions in accomplishing their mission
3.b Enhance the ability of institutions to provide safe and productive environments, to anticipate and prepare for change, crisis, and disruption
Program Learning Outcome Four: Conduct Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
4.a Select and apply appropriate research methodology to assess needs and effectiveness
4.b Use assessment and research data to inform practice and administrative decisions
4.c Design and conduct a research study, and effectively communicate the results using a variety of media (e.g., written, oral, electronic).
- A master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution that has been approved, or an appropriately certified foreign institution
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) in work leading to the master’s degree and in any subsequent graduate study
- A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy .”
All applications for admission must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative is available to help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:
- Completed Application for Admission form.
- Documentation of applicant employment with or access to a professional or educational organization.
- Official transcripts for the institution that conferred the master’s degree and institutions where graduate coursework was subsequently taken. Bachelor’s level transcripts are not required.
- Prior to matriculation, applicants will be required to submit a personal/professional goal statement.
Students in the EdD in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are eligible for graduation when the following requirements are met:
- Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study developed in consultation with the advisor
- Satisfactory completion of 60 credit hours beyond the master’s degree that includes
- 24 credit hours of core courses
- 12 credit hours of research courses
- 12 credit hours of concentration courses
- 12 credit hours of doctoral research courses
- Minimum grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) and a grade of “B-” or better in all required courses
- Successful completion of the Doctoral Qualifying Examination
- Satisfactory performance on the Summative Assessment (E7514 Comprehensive Internship and Project )
- Successful completion and defense of the Doctoral Research project
- Completion of all degree requirements within seven years of matriculation in program
- Completed Petition to Graduate From submitted to Campus Administration
Students in the EdD in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are required to complete 60 credit hours distributed as follows: core course requirements, 24 credit hours; research requirements, 12 credit hours; concentration requirements, 12 credit hours; doctoral research requirements, 12 credit hours.
Core Course Requirements
Students in the EdD in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are required to complete eight core courses (24 credit hours).

Students in the EdD in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are required to take four courses (12 credit hours) within the Interdisciplinary Studies concentration area.

Doctoral Qualifying Examination
Students are required to successfully complete a Doctoral Qualifying Examination (DQE) that focuses on the learner outcomes that are associated with the required core courses of their programs. Students must take the DQE the session after successfully completing all required core courses and must pass it within three sessions of successfully completing all required core courses.
Doctoral Research Requirements (12 Credit Hours)
Upon successful completion of the prerequisite coursework and the doctoral qualifying exam (DQE), students enroll in doctoral research courses. To progress through each doctoral research course, students must successfully complete specified course objectives. If all objectives of the course are successfully met, students will earn a PR grade, permitting them to enroll in the next doctoral research course as outlined in the course sequence of their program of study. If objectives of a doctoral research course are substantively but not fully met (67% completed) by the end of the course (as determined by the research mentors) students will earn a grade of Incomplete Progressing (IP) for the course and must complete an IP contract outlining a plan for completion of the remaining course objectives. Students must successfully complete all remaining course objectives by the due date specified in the IP contract before enrollment is permitted in the next doctoral research course. If little to no progress has been made in a doctoral research course (less than 67% of the course objectives were successfully completed) or the IP contract is not successfully fulfilled within the specified timeframe, students will earn a grade of No Credit (NC). Students who earn a grade of NC in a doctoral research course are required to retake the course. A student may only receive any combination of two NC, W, or WF grades in doctoral research courses. Upon receiving the third NC, W, or WF grade in a doctoral research course, the student will be dismissed from the program. Published course objectives for each doctoral research course apply unless the student and research mentors agree to and confirm in writing alternative specified objectives more appropriate for a particular doctoral research topic. Students must fulfill the prerequisites of each doctoral research course before enrollment is permitted.
